Moor luxury lounging….
Perhaps there’s something about modern Moorish design concepts that means money, as Mandarin Oriental extends the success of Sultan Lounge to Casbah. Designed by SWOT Design Group and opened in December 2010, this opulent Arabian-style lounge replaces Pacifica at Mandarin Oriental. It dishes out inventive mezze, lipsmackingly wicked cocktails and exotic Arabian rhythms that will make your belly dance in more ways than one from within a dramatic setting befitting its futuristic Orient theme.

Split-level society….
Within the green-certified giant that is G Tower lies a ‘split-level’ restaurant, bar and wine post, so that you don’t waste travel time having to hop between dinner, post-dinner drinks and drinking. Now there’s a nifty trick to settle your “where ah?” woes.

Wine @ Nine

Wine @ Nine

Taman Tun Dr Ismail

Pool and plonk….
Pool and wine are a funny mix and Wine @ Nine is having the last laugh. A wine cellar with five American pool tables (games are RM21++/hour), Wine @ Nine may be miniscule in comparison to most pool joints, but regulars like its atmosphere, courteous service staff and friendly patrons. In addition to wine, it also serves the usual beers and whiskeys but no food. Unlike many dark, dingy pool bars, Wine @ Nine breaks the mould with its bright and clean appearance; its blue and white décor oozes calm and class, and it’s non-smoking to boot.

Neighbourhood sports bar shoots and scores.…
They call it a sports café but this brightly decorated joint is really more of a sports bar. Decked out with sports collectibles from jerseys to posters to racquets and bats, this family establishment has four huge TV monitors screening sports and during big game nights, a huge screen is specially set up outside. The dress code (and we mean that loosely) is team colours, but no matter how dire the fate of your side, there’s no hard liquor served here. Fortunately Eckywoobee more than makes up for it with cheap beers. So if you’re in TTDI looking for a casual night of sports with something stronger than a teh tarik, look no further.

The Red Victorian

Neo-Victorian style bar-restaurant for gentle debauchery….
If it’s a quiet place you want but one that’s not far away from the action, then JUICE recommends Red Victorian. Perhaps inspired by the B+B of the same name in San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury area, The Red Victorian KL is located in a cul-de-sac next door to Havana, and is decorated in a neo-Victorian style with gilded picture frames and mounted animal heads set against flock wallpaper. Armchairs and low tables lit by chandeliers and lamps provide intimate areas for wining and dining and beers too, and there’s a patio area outside.

Laundry

Good, clean, fun!
Unpretentious, cool, Laundry would even be described as a little bit grimey if it weren’t so slickly located within The Curve’s socially engineered mélange of bars and restaurants. Despite its location it attracts a mix of hipsters, clubbers, hip hoppers and who dig the relaxed ambience, spartan concrete set up and credible and varied quality music offerings. Laundry is also home to the newly incepted Klub Pong, a night of heated battle with local music pushers over ping pong balls, bats and Heineken beers. Despite the trail of trendies that march through here on a regular basis you’re still likely to find regular folks downing beers and watching footie too – because everyone has to do Laundry.

Everyone needs a beer break….
The only work you’ll be doing at Overtime is lifting beer mugs. The watering hole has recently opened a new outlet at Tropicana City Mall (at time of publishing Overtime had a total of 8 outlets in Malaysia) which is good news for PeeJay residents who enjoy a regular mug of fresh Starker and other after-work drinks. In an unpretentious environment with good food and drinks like this, it’s likely that your boss won’t mind spending another round either.

Spanish Subang….
The spitting image of the original Bangsar La Bodega, La Bodega’s Empire Shopping Gallery outpost wears the same terracotta tiles, deep red and rich yellow walls, dark stained timber flooring, distinctive black and white photographic images of 50s Spain – even its suspended wine rack. Opened on November 17 last year (2010), the main deck outside is set to provide an intimate dining experience. Partitioned by lush greenery and a dancing fountain, the terrace is a serene setting for conversations over cocktails, people watching and of course, tapas!

Thy daily bread….
Translated as “bread time”, Brotzeit is a fond Bavarian expression that refers to a traditional Bavarian meal consumed in a biergarten. Opened in October 2010 at Mid Valley Megamall’s outdoor boulevard by Singapore’s Garibaldi Group (there are outlets in VivoCity, Raffles City and 313@Somerset), Brotzeit’s German bier bar and restaurant serves up grassroots cuisine from the south-eastern state of Germany and a selection of premium German beers. Set against an au courant backdrop with a set up of wooden benches, long tables and an extensive bar counter to encourage socializing among parties, the staff is lovely and will throw in the odd German expressions to complete your experience.

Bar Madrid

Get Real….
We don’t know if it’s a saying here but it’s better to be red than dead seems to apply. Enter through Bar Madrid’s decorative iron gates and inside is a simply furnished bar and restaurant wrapped in raging red walls and decorated with the Spanish flag. Suburban and sterile Palm Square is not a patch on Plaza Mayor in the Spanish capital, but pair a bottle or glass of Spanish wine, cava (the Spanish version of champagne) or sangria with the kitchen’s non-halal tapas and you’ve got a terrific way of whiling away a sweltering afternoon in the suburbs.
