Massive 2011: TRIMIX Interview
by Max Choong on Friday, 30th September 2011Set to wow fellow Malaysians at Massive 2011 is our very own homegrown DJ trio TRIMIX, consisting of Samuel Dan, David Gary, and Droolotte Tasha. These three are forces to be reckoned with as each of their respective skills play off one another to create a unique trance-based sound. Despite only forming two years ago, each individual has had experience in the production and arrangement of music and one (we won’t name anyone!) even conducted an orchestra at 14. JUICE catches up with the trio just in time before Massive 2011.

Massive 2011: Marcel Woods Interview
by Max Choong on Thursday, 29th September 2011Dancefloors and festivals had fallen upon Marcel Woods in swift succession, having played at Trance Energy, Escape into the Park, Sanctuary and many more in just one summer run! 2008 saw him become the only DJ ever to play both the White and Black Edition Sensation parties in one season. He was responsible for some of the biggest productions of the last few years, including the official Trance Energy 2006 anthem ‘Advanced’, the Pete Tong Essential Tune ‘Monotone’, Tiësto’s 2009 favourite ‘Inside Me’ and the smash hit ‘Lemon Tree’.
Now he will grace us with his sets and will be playing at Massive 2011 in Sepang International Circuit this coming 1 Oct. But before that, we caught up with him and asked him some questions…

Interview: Shh… Diam!
by Penny Wong on Friday, 5th August 2011After gaining a spot on JUICE’s There Goes The Neighbourhood: 11 Local Acts of Eargasm feature, many wrote to us wanting to know more about riot grrls, Shh… Diam! Formed almost two years ago, the band consists of lead vocalist and guitarist Farah, Yon on guitar, bassist Diyz and Jellene on drums. We finally got the band in their most coherent state to share their thoughts on the local music scene, female-musician stereotypes and songs about… a horse? [more »]
Everything You Need To Know About The 90s
by Penny Wong on Wednesday, 27th July 2011The 90s were turbulent times. But since many have fond memories of that decade, we’ve decided to revisit the past at our ninth anniversary party happening this 29 July @ G-Six. So now, with fair warning, it’s time to do your homework! Here’s a comprehensive (aka whatever) list of things that made that period of time what it was, from A to Z. Read on and reminisce… [more »]
Interview: A-Trak
by Penny Wong on Wednesday, 13th July 2011When you’ve won the biggest DJ competition in the world at 15, what else is there to do? Plenty, as A-Trak (born Alain Macklovitch) so casually proves. This Montréal-born turntablist wasted no time in turning his sights to the electro house scene, where more reverence and champagne fueled fun followed. He’s sold out clubs and festivals, been tabbed as Kanye West’s personal tour DJ, spawned multiple hit tracks and remixes, and oh, we haven’t even mentioned his little side project called Duck Sauce. A-Trak dropped by Zouk a while back, so we got him to share some thoughts on his mile-long resume. [more »]
I Wanna Be A Producer: Bo Amir Iqram
by Ben Liew on Friday, 10th June 2011
The music Producers of today seem to really be putting themselves in the mix! Along with the meteoric rise of independent labels, we’ve observed an increase in the number of Producers who are in charge of everything from managing recordings, to gathering ideas, selecting songs and musicians, coaching talent, and controlling recording sessions through to mixing and mastering! Some even take on a wider entrepreneurial role, with responsibility for the budget, schedules, and negotiations. But is that happening in Malaysia as well? JUICE talks to some big names in the local industry to find out what it’s really like.
Interview: Blonde Redhead
by Penny Wong on Tuesday, 7th June 2011Blonde Redhead is a stubborn bunch, no? Impossible to pin down in sound, the New York-born trio – made of frontwoman Kazu Makino and twins Simone and Amedeo Pace – has had 17 years’ of experience in dodging style and genre bullets, with a canon of eight albums standing as testament to its assorted adventures in post-punk, art rock, dream pop, electronica and well, the combination of all of the above. 2007’s 23 scored the band its biggest critical goal, which its latest Penny Sparkle follows up on with more sublime and daring dreamscapes. JUICE caught up with Simone before their vivacious show at Esplanade recently.
Interview: Beach House
by Penny Wong on Monday, 6th June 2011There are so many things to love about Alex Scally and Victoria Legrand’s Beach House: From the Baltimore duo’s knack for timeless, scintillating dream pop, to its second and latest record, Teen Dream, which weaves a spellbinding canvas of guitar, organ and breathy vocals to equally exultant and melancholic effect. We love them loads and managed to score an interview with Victoria ahead of their Laneway gig in Singapore…
An Experimental Odyssey: Siew Wai & Yandsen
by Jessica Wong on Friday, 15th April 2011With the space adventure on hold indefinitely due to our ship’s system turning into an Atari (no thanks to Lee Kwang’s toxic astro-mist), JUICE heads to Studio in Cheras, KL (SiCKL), art lab of experimental musicians Siew Wai and Yandsen. These 2 were responsible for organising the Sama-Sama Guesthouse Alternative Festival in August last year as well as a host of other events under the Experimental Musicians and Artists Co-operative Malaysia (EMACM), which they also founded. Siew Wai is a vocalist while Yandsen plays the flute, clarinet and saxophone. We sit back as they spew their perspectives all over us. Finally, some clarity cast upon the unknown.
An Experimental Odyssey: Goh Lee Kwang
by Jessica Wong on Friday, 15th April 2011In an attempt to seek out local experimental musicians, JUICE journeys anxiously in search of Goh Lee Kwang, a Malaysian sound and media artist who has performed on an international scale. Most of the time with broken gadgets or VCD players. Fark glitch house! This guy’s the real thing.
