Detonate: Suff Daddy

by Kevin Yeoh on Thursday, 26th August 2010

Forget Jay-Z and Kanye hip hop; it’s time to make like mellow smooth with Suff Daddy. Hailing from Düsseldorf, Germany, Suff is currently one of the most talented new hip hop acts making music. (The “Suff” in his name translates to the act of drinking excessively or the state of being addicted to alcohol in German. Hic!) [more »]

by Ben Liew on Friday, 23rd July 2010

Brooklyn is fast becoming a hotbed of new, exciting acts that are defining Obama’s nu-America. Now, in addition to TV On The Radio, Dirty Projectors and French Horn Rebellion, we have noise pop duo Sleigh Bells. [more »]

Detonate: Decipher

by Kevin Yeoh on Monday, 8th March 2010

Chris Pereira aka Decipher was first introduced to hip hop in ’93 when a family friend passed him Snoop Dogg’s Doggystyle album. Later on, Decipher got infected by Cypress Hill and things just started snowballing from there. These days, the MC digs into Rakim, Inspectah Deck, Kurupt, Nas, Jay-Z, The Roots, Altimet and Rogue Squadron. [more »]

Detonate: Law

by Ben Liew on Sunday, 28th February 2010

Expelling a musical fart in the face of predictability is local singer-songwriter and one-man-band Law. Detonate: Delphic

by Ben Liew on Thursday, 25th February 2010

It’s been close to 3 decades now since the birth of Madchester. Discos are now referred to as clubs, ecstasy is passé and indie has infiltrated dancefloors. So where does that leave Mancunian alt dance trio Delphic? Sure, they came 3rd on BBC’s Sound Of 2010 list, which prompted one critic to say that their debut album Acolyte “might just be the first great album of 2010”. But are they the new New Order or just another rock band trying to go dance? [more »]

Detonate: Dirty Projectors

by Ben Liew on Thursday, 7th January 2010

Most bands strive to sound different without realising that they’re taking the fun out of music for the rest of us. It’s like that smart-a$s kid in school that always insisted on adding new rules to a simple game of catch. [more »]

Detonate: Them Crooked Vultures

by Ben Liew on Thursday, 10th December 2009

Yet another supergroup whose name is bouncing off the lips of rock fans everywhere is Them Crooked Vultures. Its members need no introduction, but since there are some who still believe this is too good to be true, we’ll confirm it for you.

Azlan & The Typewriter

by Ben Liew on Wednesday, 25th November 2009

There comes a time when a man needs to strike out on his own, stand his ground and make the music that he wants to make. Everyone knows Azlan (or Lan) from his 8-year tenure with rising indie pop darlings Meet Uncle Hussain. When word got out earlier this year that the stirred-up vocalist was leaving the band, heads shook and forums flooded, but JUICE knew that this wouldn’t be the last time we’d be hearing Lan’s powerful, high-pitched voice. The Big Pink

by Ben Liew on Tuesday, 24th November 2009

Love is a tricky subject to tackle for artists. There’s always the danger of sounding too cheesy or worst, pretentious and removed – like some sort of subhuman Ziggy Stardust throwing moons and stars as metaphors for relationships. [more »]

Dead Man’s Bones

by Ben Liew on Wednesday, 14th October 2009

A Hollywood heartthrob, his acting buddy and a massive children choir put together a concept album about ghosts, ghoulies and things that go bump in the night. Trick or treat? [more »]
