Old Klang Road gets it’s own OverTime…
Famed for its fresh, Stärker beer, Wooden décor and a wide variety of authentic and signature drinks, OverTime has transformed Old Klang Road into a living, breathing German bar. As Old Klang Road is famous for its bak kut teh restaurants, the chain watering hole outlet should make for a nice pre- or post-dinner occasion. Or, you could just get your porky fix at OverTime itself.

JB finally gets some craic….
One thing we’ve discovered about the Irish is that they sure know how to enjoy a good pint, and have a great time doing it. Mulligan’s Permas Jaya is JB’s first Irish pub. It was over three years ago that owner William Ho left his baker livelihood to open Mulligan’s after travelling to Ireland and gaining an appreciation of craic, a fond Gaelic expression for “fun”. Much of what you expect to see in an Irish pub is present: woody interior, fake fireplace, bright green and gold colour scheme. An indoor golf simulator upstairs has proven to be popular, but those who prefer other ball sports can watch footie and rugby on the overhanging TVs or shoot some pool.

For craic addicts….
The Irish know how to enjoy a good pint and have a great time doing it. With Mulligan’s in Permas Jaya bringing the craic to JB more than three years ago to resounding success, its sister outlet in Taman Pelangi has seen the same affable crowds since it opened over a year ago. The same Irish pub affectations are present: wood interior, fake fireplace and green and gold colours. While it lacks Permas Jaya’s indoor golf simulator, you can still watch the footie and rugby on the overhanging TVs or shoot some pool.

Live music every day….
Having existed for more than a decade, Backyard has carved itself a spot in Malaysia’s Hangout Hall of Fame for its live music and reasonably-priced beers. Though it has its regulars who come here to unwind, have a pint and tuck into The Grill’s offerings like its famed Chicken Curry (RM10.90) and Black Pepper Lamb Cubes (RM16.90), it also draws a keen but more mature audience seeking live music on a daily basis.

Mad dogs and Englishmen….
With a name like Bulldog Pub and Restaurant, you can expect nothing less than a classic English pub here. Tucked away in a quiet corner of residential Taman Sri Hartamas, the concept of Bulldog is spot-on English – from the décor to the traditional English pub grub and drink; all that’s missing is a picture of the Queen, although they do have the red telephone booth! There’s live music downstairs on Friday nights and British tables and dartboards upstairs if you’re up for some healthy competition.

Cheers

Where everybody knows your name….
Like the TV show, Cheers, tucked away in the recesses of Jalan Batai’s double block of neighbourhood shophouses is something of a local watering hole. Neither trendy, nor try-hard, this reliable boozer attracts an older (30+) crowd of professionals, locals and expatriates who are never with an empty glass in hand. For the area, the beer is sensitive to the sad state of today’s wallet and the food is budget-conscious too. If a decent drink with good food and an easy-going crowd of regulars in a relaxed setting puts a spark in your smile then this is your kind of magic.

Tom, Dick & Harry’s

Three men and a watering hole….
Run by not three but two jolly chaps, this young pub-and-grub sits along the same stretch of TTDI’s Rahim Kajai as Sid’s Pub and Deutsches Gasthaus. That’s some pretty intense competition. The ambience is laid back and relaxed and music is secondary; at TDH you won’t have to oblige live performances, conversation is king. And for a pub that pulls a mean pint, TDH makes great cocktails as well – the bartenders are all award-winning mixologists. The service is just as top notch too, and the staff is always in good spirits and greets you like Italians at Christmas. It all adds up to a real neighbourhood charm that draws even non-locals to its grounds.
