The Original Series – Grandmaster Flash @ Sultan Lounge
by Alif Omar Mahfix on Tuesday, 11th October 2011Don’t call yourself a hip hop head if you missed out on this event. Grandmaster Flash was here in Kuala Lumpur at Sultan Lounge and we saw a total of, what, less than 5 actual hip hoppers there. Admittedly this wasn’t anyone’s fault, there was barely any hype to the Grandmaster’s arrival here. Like mythical kung fu archetypes, it was almost like he came out of nowhere, kicked some *ss, and left just like that – with only a few truly appreciative of his brief presence.

Super Everything @ MAP KL, Solaris Dutamas
by Alif Omar Mahfix on Tuesday, 4th October 2011It’s hard to explain what Super Everything is to the uninitiated, especially when the title itself isn’t very self-explanatory (hell, it’s still a mystery to us even now). To borrow a term the makers use themselves, Super Everything is a live cinema experience – a non-traditional means of audio-visual entertainment where there isn’t a fixed edit, like the traditional wayang kulit the creators play their narrative live to the audience.

Lykke Li @ Esplanade, Singapore
by Ben Liew on Monday, 3rd October 2011Looked at my watch. 9.15pm. Tsk. 45 minutes late. (Expected I suppose, as they’ve started closing down roads for F1 happening that same week). Looked to my left, my boyfriend looks like a teenager about to go on his first date. He didn’t even look that nervous on OUR first date. Everyone’s anxious. Anticipation, as thick as the make-up on some of these girls’ faces.
Made in Phones: A Mophog Group Exhibition @ Minut Init
by Alif Omar Mahfix on Friday, 23rd September 2011Since the first time mobile phones were given camera function, users have been given a hard time for using the device for photography. But that was a time when phones were still only good for, well, being a communication device. In the age of smartphones where some models can even shoot HD-quality videos, having a good built-in camera is a prerequisite for all mobiles. Zam Nayan, founder of mobile-photography collective TinPix, noticed this and wondered if there can be such a thing as gallery-worthy photography done purely using mobile phones. This idea was exactly what gave birth to Made in Phones: a Mophog Group Exhibition, held for the first time at Minut Init recently.

by Ben Liew on Thursday, 8th September 2011If you had told us that a group in Melbourne, Australia could run a bigger and crazier Merdeka party than we do in Malaysia, we would not have believed you. That is, until we saw the videos and images from the biggest Merdeka celebration in Melbourne at Level 3, Crown Casino by the TANG group.

Whisky Tasting for The Uninitiated
by Alif Omar Mahfix on Saturday, 3rd September 2011
Being the plebeians that we are, when it comes to drinking we are more content with getting drunk from downing unsophisticated beer. Never expanding our horizon to something a little more cultured. Thanks to Glenmorangie though, we feel slightly educated and all classy-like after their whisky tasting session.
Freedom VYC @ Melaka, Penang, JB and KL

“It's great to hear that there are programs like this that provides fun activities and education to these youths. Its good to see them safe, happy and smiling.
